Study finds evidence of historical celiac misdiagnosis in Norway.

In a Norwegian study, all 465 celiac cases newly detected through screening carried celiac-associated HLA-DQ variants. Among 21 previously diagnosed patients who lacked these variants, biopsy review supported the diagnosis in only five — suggesting some historical diagnoses could not be confirmed on reassessment.

Undiagnosed celiac disease showed measurable health effects.

A Finnish population study found more anemia and lower ferritin among 92 previously undiagnosed cases. After 11 years, people following a gluten-free diet had quality-of-life and cardiometabolic measures comparable with controls, while mortality was not higher over 17 years.

COVID-19 infection was not linked to a significant increase in celiac disease in a new review.

A meta-analysis of four retrospective studies covering more than 10.5 million people found no statistically significant rise in celiac disease after COVID-19 infection. With only four studies and substantial differences between their findings, researchers say larger prospective studies are still needed.
